In our recent TBN UK survey, viewers chose the popular CBN animated series Superbook as their number-one children’s programme. So this month, with the school holidays in full swing across the UK, CBN Europe’s Regional Director Mark Dijkens is here to tell us how Superbook is impacting children with timeless moral truths and crucial life lessons through the captivating, Bible-based adventures of two time-traveling youngsters and their robot friend. Superbook airs Fridays on TBN UK at 4:30 p.m., and repeats Saturdays at 8:30 a.m.
IN THE SPOTLIGHTNearly forty years ago the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) launched an innovative children’s animated Bible series as part of our outreach to Japan. Known in Japan as Anime Oyako Gekijo (“Animated Parent and Child Theater”), this was the beginnings of the CBN series now known worldwide as Superbook. The popularity of the series took off immediately, as over eight million viewers per night watched Superbook on Japanese prime-time television.
A few years later the series spread to the Soviet Union, where millions more children were impacted by the biblical truths they experienced through Superbook as it aired in prime time on Soviet National TV.
Today Superbook has grown into one of the most impacting faith-based children’s series of all time, as it regularly reaches over 160 million viewers in 90 countries and 46 languages.
As impressive as that all sounds, for us here at CBN the ultimate success of Superbook is about the children and families who are reached with the incomparable message of God’s love.
On a personal note, each week I am blessed to hear countless stories of children who have accepted Jesus as their Saviour through Superbook. Allow me to share just one of them with you. It is the story of Francis, a young boy who struggled with anxiety until he started watching Superbook.
“I was afraid when I got picked to stand in front of the whole school and show them my homework,” said Francis to us recently. “I was afraid and thought people were going to laugh at me.”
But as Francis began to watch Superbook, he came to understand the power of God. “I believed that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” he said. “I shouldn’t be afraid because I know the power that God has given me…. I believe with my heart that Jesus died and rose again to take away my sin.”
