Hi, TBN UK viewers. My name is Paul Manwaring. My wife and I live in Windsor, and I am part of the senior leadership team for Bethel Church in California, with my primary focus being outreach and ministry to Europe. In the past, I have worked as a psychiatric nurse, and I served for nearly twenty years in the Prison Service of England and Wales, where I became a prison governor.
I’m really excited about my new TBN Presents series, which is all about purpose. The need for each of us to discover our purpose has never been more relevant than it is today, emphasized even more by the COVID-19 crisis. The lack of purpose so many individuals around us are experiencing has caused many mental and emotional challenges.
Through this series you will discover God as the ultimate origin of purpose, and learn about His deep desire for each of us to discover our purpose in Him. God wastes nothing in our lives, and this programme will leave you encouraged and confident about finding your purpose — whoever you are, whatever you do, and wherever you go!
With each episode we will look into a key verse from Scripture, tackle a big question of the week, and learn a biblical declaration regarding
our purpose.

God to the lonely
Finding ourselves in the midst of spring, many are still in the thick of self-isolation and social-distancing. In what can be a lonely time, we’re looking at the evidence of God’s closeness.
He meets our need
“He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.”
1 Kings 19:6 (NIV)
Elijah had never felt more alone. He had fled to the wilderness, sat alone, and prayed that he might die. And yet, in his despair, God was tending to him. Elijah woke to the smell of baked bread and water to drink. He was exhausted, and this was just what he needed. God provided him with sustenance and led Elijah into His presence. Shortly after, God didn’t speak to Elijah in the overwhelming loudness of His power, but in a gentle whisper. God is able to meet us in the quiet, to sustain us, and to give us direction.
He builds community
“But Ruth replied, ‘Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.’”
Ruth 1: 16 (NIV)
Ruth and Naomi had both lost their husbands, and must have felt incredibly alone. In their culture, family was a key part of their identity. Naomi had expected her daughters-in-law to leave her. However, Ruth clung to Naomi and joined her community instead. There are many people who, sadly, have been separated from loved ones during the coronavirus pandemic, due to work, illness, or even death. God prompts us to form bonds with others, especially those who are alone or grieving. As Christians, let’s remind those who are lonely that we are there for them, and that they are part of a loving family and community of God’s people.
He is in charge
“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”
Luke 22:42 (NIV)
Facing the cross, Jesus knew this was the time for a one-to-one intimate conversation with the Father. Jesus was experiencing pressure and fear that no one else around Him could understand, and yet He committed, in advance, to submit to God’s will. As we find ourselves in what can be a confusing and lonely time, we may wonder what God is planning. It’s good to pray honestly and seek His wisdom. Ultimately, strength is found when we are able to trust Him as our authority, even in difficult circumstances.
He provides opportunities
“He comes alongside us when we go through hard times, and before you know it, he brings us alongside someone else who is going through hard times so that we can be there for that person just as God was there for us.”
2 Corinthians 1:4 (MSG)
The apostle Paul wrote this as someone who understood real hardship and persecution. In unwanted circumstances, it is easy to look inwardly at the effect a situation is having on our lives. However, Paul realised that out of our distress, God helps us to look outwardly and help others. Our finances, fitness, friendships (the list is endless!) will all be affected moving forward, so we’ll need to learn with and lean on each other. We hope you’ve been on the receiving end of such support from your church. If not, it may be a prompt for you to reach out. Getting connected with nearby friends or church communities can build a support network for advice and aid, even if just over the phone or internet.
Since the announcement encouraging everyone who can to work from home, our team has definitely been adapting. Our Behind the Scenes feature looks a little different this month, with many on the sofa! A lot of our content has been filmed from home, while our prayer team members have stayed by the phone to answer your calls.
